Boucle ScarfButtonhole Scarf and Ear Warmer

Two quick and easy projects which can be made from one skein of irresistibly soft and warm boucle yarn. Scarf has a buttonhole-like slit which allows one end to slip through the other for a neat and secure crossing. The ear warmer protects your ears without completely wrecking your hairdo.

Materials: 1 5 oz ball Bernat's Soft Boucle
Gauge: KP 3 dot ISM or T 7 LK150. Gauge is not important.
Size: Scarf is approximately 46" by 6". Ear warmer is approximately 22" by 3".

SCARF: With WY, CO 29 sts from 14 L to 15 R and knit one or two rows. E-wrap over all needles with MY. COR. RC=0. K until RC=11. Beginning the third st from one side, unravel st down 10 rws and latch up in ribbing. Continue across the row reforming EOS 10 rows and ending with third st from other side. Knit until RC=48 and at the same time, continue to unravel and latch up 3rd and 5th sts from both sides every 15 to 20 rows for the rest of the scarf. Shape slot: COR. Remove wire fabric guide and take yarn out of carriage. Bring all ndls to forward working position (FWP) with latches open. Lay yarn into latches of first 15 ndls (15 R to 1 R). Taking the tail of yarn from the other end of the ball, lay it in the next 14 ndls from 1 L to 14 L with the tail between 1 L and 1 R. Holding yarn loosely and slightly forward in needles, knit across. Bring ndls to FWP with latches open again, lay yarn in the same needles as before in the opposite direction changing from one yarn to the other at center and do not cross yarns at center. Knit across. Loosen yarns before each rw to assure an even gauge. Knit in pattern until RC=68, COR. Thread MY into carriage and replace wire fabric guard. Break off yarn in middle. K until RC=225. Reform sts down 10 rows for ribbing across the rw as before. BO loosely with latch tool chain stitch. Work in yarn tails working yarn tails at the beg and end of the slot back and forth neatly at the ends of the slot to reinforce. Steam and gently coax ribbing open so scarf lays flat.

EAR WARMER: With WY, CO 70 sts. K 6 rws. Change to MY, RC=0. K 41 rws. Decide which option you want to close seam. Option 1 looks neater, but is more time consuming. Option 1: take off on 6 rws of WY. Lay so first sts and last sts are adjacent RS facing you and graft together with like color smooth worsted weight yarn (Grafting with boucle is too difficult.) Option 2: Dec one st by placing one st on one end onto an adjacent ndl. Bring all ndls to FWP and push all sts behind latches. Hang weights across the row on the RS about 1/3 of the way down. Bring first rw of MY sts in WY up and hang into latches. Pull sts in latches through sts behind the latches and BO with latch tool chair stitch. Finishing: work in all yarn tails. Seam ends together with mattress stitch from the RS.

 Enjoy!
